A popular walking route which takes in the history of Great Malvern has been recognised by the Heritage UK Awards.

Great Malvern: The Route to the Hills has been shortlisted for the ‘Must Visit’, ‘Contribution to Heritage’ and ‘Best Family Day Out’ categories at the event on 25 March.

The prestigious awards recognise places contributing to the world of heritage and are open to all historical houses, heritage gardens, museums, archaeological sites and more.

The Route to the Hills trail was officially launched last year and encapsulates Great Malvern’s rich history through a series of wall and floor plaques, bespoke benches, signs and art installations.

Starting at Great Malvern Railway Station, the route tells stories of the town’s past including it’s unique geology, medieval beginnings, Victorian water cure developments, musical, literary and visual arts and world-changing scientific and technological innovations.

The Heritage Lottery funded project has been led by Malvern Hills District Council and involved nine other organisations.

Cllr David Watkins, Chairman of the Project Board, said: “It is wonderful news to hear that Great Malvern: Route to the Hills has been recognised in three different categories at the Heritage UK Awards. A lot of time, research and hard work went into the project which has enabled both residents and visitors to connect with the town’s rich history.

“The route has become a lasting legacy for the town which I am confident will be enjoyed for years to come.”
