Robin Walker, MP for Worcester, welcomed Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson to the city last Friday (18th May) for an official visit to local firm CMCA(UK).
The company, who provide expertise in logistics and managing equipment to the Armed Forces, hosted the Secretary of State at their headquarters in Gresley Road, Worcester, where CMCA(UK)’s Managing Director Darren Topley and members of the Board provided an overview of the company’s capabilities together with a number of case studies highlighting CMCA(UK)’s participation in various Ministry of Defence programmes. The CMCA(UK) management team also had an opportunity to present ideas to help ensure resources across the Ministry of Defence are targeted at frontline personnel and equipment, and to discuss the current challenges that SME companies operating in the defence sector are facing.
CMCA(UK) have expanded significantly in recent years, having grown from a staff of two people working from a garage to employing 65 people in Worcester. In 2011, Robin cut the ribbon on the company’s new headquarters in Warndon, and the firm now have plans to expand to a staff of 75 by the year’s end.
Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson said:
“It was really great to be able to join Robin Walker here and actually see what a difference businesses in Worcestershire are making in terms of supporting our armed forces.”
“What you have here today is a business that is making sure that the army, navy and air force are able to continue to deliver, get their equipment out and are properly supported.”
“And without those types of businesses, without helping and supporting our armed forces we would be much more worse off and a lot less safe.”
CMCA(UK) Managing Director Darren Topley said:
“We were delighted to welcome the Defence Secretary to CMCA(UK) and to have the opportunity to brief him on the specific activities we perform on behalf of the Armed Forces.”
“It is also very unusual to have a two hour private audience with such a senior figure and we feel extremely privileged that he has chosen to take time out of his busy schedule to meet with CMCA(UK).”
“Our discussions were invaluable in helping us to shape our own thinking around emerging government initiatives and policies.”
Speaking after the visit, Robin said:
“I was really glad to be able to welcome the Defence Secretary to Worcester to showcase the world-class work that CMCA do for our Armed Forces. The company have doubled their staff team in the seven years since I opened their Warndon HQ and have yet more plans for expansion this year.”
“Although Worcester no longer has a barracks or airfield, many of my constituents serve in the armed forces and local firms like CMCA(UK) benefit enormously from the Government’s commitment to maintaining 2% of our GDP on defence spending – a commitment I have long supported. In turn, this provides our city with valuable, high-skilled job opportunities. I am proud that Worcester is home to such an innovative firm who provide a vital service to our Armed Forces, and I look forward to seeing their expansion continue apace.”
